SART 3304 Book Arts
Discipline(s): Fine Arts
Credits: 3
Available: fall semester 2023, spring semester 2024
Instructor: Patricia Silva
Course Type: Fine Arts
Course Description
This intensive course will introduce students to the traditions and methods of the handmade book, as well as the expressive possibilities available with bookmaking. The course will begin with simple foundational structures such as pamphlet-stitched and accordion style books and progress through more complex historical structures such as books sewn on supports and exposed spine sewings. Students will incorporate the book structures introduced in class in the creation of their own artist’s book projects. Exploration with materials is encouraged and students can combine other media that they are familiar with (such as photography, printmaking, painting, etc.) in creating their bookworks. To help acquaint students with the long and on-going tradition of book arts in Italy, selected fieldtrips will be organized to visit contemporary artists and artisans working in the field. Time permitting, the class will also visit museums or institutions in the area which maintain collections relevant to the art of the book.
Studio courses will have personal and course materials to be purchased in Florence. A complete list will be provided with the syllabus on the first day of class.
