Course description and Objectives

In this Creative Writing course, Florence will be the context of our attempt to understand the relation between an artist/writer and a city, and to find one’s own writer’s identity by employing various strategies of observation, as well as various methods for finding and creating stories. Other then allowing ourselves to be curious about mudane and daily routines of the city, we will also rely on Florence’s extraordinarily rich cultural and scientific heritage, from the medieval city to the modernity of the 19th century, all the way to the present-day mass tourism. We will observe ways in which visual art interacts with the art of writing, by looking at examples of borderline practices in which text becomes an image and an image completes the text.

We will pay attention to various and diverse literary voices of our time, and recent times, whose work will be connected with the topics of our assignments.
